The Law of Liberty in the Spiritual Life (1884)

"It is a book that will assist powerfully in rousing the Church from her lethargy, so that she may become the witness to the world which her Lord desires her to be." -Christian Leader "The Work is a most edifying one." -Record "Will be welcomed by many. . . . The Chapter on 'Life' is admirable." -Christian Evan Henry Hopkins (1837-1918) was ordained as a priest in the Church of England. He was a key player in the The Higher Life movement, also known as the Keswick movement, a movement devoted to Christian holiness in England. Its name comes from a book by William Boardman, titled The Higher Christian Life, which was published in 1858. The movement is sometimes referred to as the Keswick movement because it was promoted at Keswick Conventions in Keswick, which continue to this day. The main idea of the Higher Life movement is that the Christian should move on from his initial conversion experience to also experience a second work of God in his life. This work of God is called “entire sanctification,” “the second blessing,” “the second touch,” “being filled with the Holy Spirit,” and various other terms. Higher Life teachers promoted the idea that Christians who had received this blessing from God could live a more holy, that is less sinful or even a sinless, life. The so-called Keswick approach seeks to provide a mediating and biblically balanced solution to the problem of subnormal Christian experience. The “official” teaching has been that every believer in this life is left with the natural proclivity to sin and will do so without the countervailing influence of the Holy Spirit. At age 36 after a lecture by American Quaker Robert Pearsall Smith, Hopkins was convinced that like justification, sanctification, too, was to be received by faith. Hopkins' wife wrote: "Oh, I was so hungry. At last, quite simply, but very really, I too took God at His Word, and accepted Christ as my indwelling Lord and Life, and believed that he did enthrone himself in my heart." In 1884, Hopkins published his book "The Law of Liberty in the Spiritual Life" which instructs that: "There may be a good deal of outward activity in work that is really good, and yet no 'fruit.' What the apostle desired on behalf of the Colossian converts was that they might be 'fruitful in every good work' (Colossians 1:10); in other words, that their service should be the direct outcome of a Divine, indwelling, vital principle." "The branch bears, but the root produces it." And that root is Christ. "Everything needed for continual growth, for perpetual freshness, and for abundant fruitfulness are found in Him. All power, all grace, all purity, and all fullness, absolutely everything to make all grace abound towards us, in us, and through us, are stored up in Him who verily dwells within us." "The truth is, we need two powers: a power to remove the hindrances, and a power to produce the fruit; a power to separate us from the evil, and a power to transform us into the good. This twofold power is found in Christ. There is the power of His death, and the power of His life." Other books by Hopkins include: Thoughts on Life and Godliness The Holy Life File Size=651 KB.
